Since the year my sister passed away, I have had the idea of organizing a 5k Run/Walk in her memory. It was a dream that became a reality in 2011 at the first annual “For the Love of Lindsey” Memorial Race. The preparations for this year’s race are already underway. For years, I ran the streets of this very race, praying for my sister’s cancer to disappear. Following her passing I ran those same streets in grief, attempting to breathe through the sobs. Today, I run those streets in memory of her. Each block has its story and memories. We lived our whole lives in that small town and when I run through those streets it is there where I believe she is running right beside me.
For the Love of Lindsey 5K is a memorial Run to honor and celebrate the life of
Lindsey Marie Popelas who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in the fall of
2001 and lost this battle on January 3, 2006. During her short life she touched
many lives with her ability to see the good in others, to focus on the
positive, to be a friend to the unfriended and to love God no matter what the
test results revealed. In the midst of treatments she began her college
education at California University of Pennsylvania in hopes of becoming an
elementary school teacher. During her fight, many people gathered in prayer,
sent cards and supported not only to her but our whole family through the most
trying time of our lives. The hope of organizing this type of race is to honor
and celebrate Lindsey’s life, as well as to honor and celebrate those who
played a role in helping us through this storm, a storm that continues, for
although 5 years have passed, we still do not have our Lindsey
Will you run with me?
